“Vaping doubles your risk of a heart attack.”
The study behind that claim was retracted in 2020. It couldn’t show the heart attacks happened after people started vaping.
The evidence
A widely publicised 2019 paper linked e-cigarette use to heart attacks. The journal retracted it.
The Journal of the American Heart Association retracted the paper on 18 February 2020, because the analysis couldn’t establish whether participants’ heart attacks happened before or after they started vaping.51
Better evidence points the other way for smokers who switch. In a large Korean study of people with heart stents, those who switched completely to vaping had an 18% lower long-term risk of cardiac events than those who kept smoking.31
