The spinMyth 10 of 14
“Vaping raises your lung-cancer risk 58 times.”
The study behind that number says “nearly all vapers also smoked”. It measured dual use, not vaping.
The evidence
A 2024 case-control study reported very high odds of lung cancer in people who both vaped and smoked.
The unadjusted odds ratio of 57.8 was for people who vaped and smoked. The authors say they couldn’t isolate vaping on its own because “nearly all vapers also smoked”.56
What it really shows is that smoking plus vaping is a terrible combination — which is why the goal is to stop smoking completely, not to add a vape on top.
